The Lesson of Virgo

Date Range: August 23 – September 22
Symbol: Virgin / Maiden
Element: Earth
Quality: Mutable
Planet: Mercury
Tarot: Hermit

Traits and Characteristics

Most of the zodiac signs are symbolized by animals, but Virgo is one of the exceptions.  Its symbol is the virgin, the young maiden who is pure of thought and deed.  While this isn’t to be taken literally (though we are certain there are plenty of virgin Virgos out there), Virgos do possess some of the qualities we would assign to a young maiden – modesty being one of those things.  The virgin has a strong understanding of right and wrong and this also carries over to Virgo who is very concerned with what is “right”, though some would argue that this makes the Virgo far too conservative.  Virgo is a perfectionist, paying close attention to the smallest of details.  While this is a positive trait, they can fall victim to the old adage about not seeing the forest for the trees.  Virgos can be deeply sensitive people, but they aren’t apt to show it and they have a tendency to take their time and be very selective when choosing a mate.

Virgo is the sign of the servant and their attention to detail and critical nature, while seeming harsh to some, can also be helpful as they guide and mold themselves and those around them to reach their highest potential.  Virgos are doers.  They are reliable, productive, dutiful, and they like to follow the rules, as long as those rules make sense.  Because of their observant and analytical natures Virgos love to sift through information and discard what is not needed.  This ability toward streamlining and efficiency makes them good managers as well as strong workers.  However, their impatience with perceived incompetence and stupidity coupled with a strong opinion that they are not afraid to voice can make them a challenge to work for and with.

The Work

For our working with Virgo, you will need to consider what areas of your life you may need to pay more attention to.  Is there something you’ve let fall to the wayside that needs more focus?  Something you’ve been ignoring that would flourish if more time were spent on the details?  Has the forest gotten so big that you can no longer appreciate the individual trees?  Perhaps it’s time to cut something out that no longer serves.  Sometimes this is as easy as making a decision and sticking to it.  Other times it’s more involved and may take some extra work in the spiritual and physical realms.  This rite is designed to help you separate the wheat from the chaff.

Circle Cast

I cast this circle for my protection, from all harm, on all levels.

I cast this circle to allow in only those energies and entities for my highest good.

I cast this circle to form a space beyond space, a time beyond time, a place in which perfect love and perfect trust reign supreme.

Quarter Calls

To the Guardian of the North and Earth, I bid you join my circle and offer your protection.  Aid me in the manifestation of my work in the realm of Virgo.  Hail and Welcome!

To the Guardian of the East and Air, I bid you join my circle and offer your protection.  Help me to see clearly what should remain and what should be discarded.  Hail and Welcome!

To the Guardian of the South and Fire, I bid you join my circle and offer your protection.  Help me burn away those things unneeded while kindling passion for my goal.  Hail and Welcome!

To the Guardian of the West and Water, I bid you join my circle and offer your protection.  Keep love in my heart as I make these needed changes.  Hail and Welcome!

Evocation of Deity

I call and honor the Great Spirit, Cauldron of the Universe, you who are all, above and below, within and without, life and death

And from you, the two who move as one

The Goddess, who is Maiden, Mother, and Crone

And the God, who is both Hunter and Hunted, Singer and Song

Join me for this working.

Hail and Welcome!

Evocation of Virgo Energy

And though the energy of Virgo currently influences our world at this time, I give formal invitation that it may aid in my work.  Hail and Welcome!

Naming the Work

It is my intention to pair with the energy of Virgo as I seek to discard those things in my life that take time and energy away from what is important to me.

Pre-work Meditation

<If you are uncertain what areas of your life or burdens are best laid aside to strengthen the important ones, enter into meditation and consult your Guides and Gods for guidance.  Even if you are certain of your goal, it is best to spend some time in introspection and consult your Guides to ensure you are making the correct decision.  If you have not formed any relationships outside the middle world, seek out spirits like the Corn Maiden, John Barelycorn, any sacrificial gods, maiden goddesses, or agricultural goddesses such as Demeter or Ceres.>

Energy Raising

<I consider the shucking to be a subtle form of energy raising, but if you’d like something more ecstatic, feel free to dance or chant.>

The Work

<Hold the ear of corn in your hands and place your intention into it – to separate the wheat from the chaff – to discard those things that are unnecessary from your life.  Make sure you have a clear understanding of what you are discarding and that you are perfectly comfortable with the consequences of this decision.  Slowly husk the corn, releasing those things that no longer serve you as you separate what is needed from what is not.  In the spirit of Virgo, be sure to pay close attention to the details, removing each piece of silk until the corn is completely clean.  Place the chaff in a bowl, to be discarded somewhere away from your home and other places you may frequent.  This is biodegradable and will not harm the environment.

To further the work, you may wish to freeze the corn until the moon is waxing and then boil or otherwise prepare and eat the corn, add it to your compost pile, bury it near your home, or if that isn’t possible, bury a few of the kernels in a potted plant.  Make sure you hold the intention of strengthening or bettering, with greater focus and detail, that portion of your life that is lacking.>

De-vocation

I offer my thanks to the energy and wisdom of Virgo.

De-vocation of Deity
