The word yantra is loosely translated to mean "supportive instrument".  A yantra are a tool for contemplation, concentration and meditation.  Yantras are usually associated with specific gods who are the focus of the meditation. They provide a focal point for the meditation. When the mind is concentrated on a single, simple object (in this case a yantra), the mental chatter ceases. Eventually, the object is dropped when the mind can remain empty and silent without help.
