Dreamcatchers originated with the Ojibwe.  One of their ancient stories speaks of Spider Woman who tended the people.  As the Ojibwe spread across the lands, Spider Woman could no longer reach all her children to protect them.  In her place, the woman of the tribe wove a spider web pattern on a willow hoop to hang above the beds.  This special net was said to help catch the dreams of the sleeper.  The good dreams are said to pass through the net and slide down the feathers to the sleeper, while the bad dreams were caught in the net to burn away in the rising morning sun.
